Restorations

Do you have an older photograph that is meaningful to your family but could use come TLC? Let us see if we can breathe new life in to that image and make it part of your family history today. An ideal gift to connect generations of memories! A client recently came to us to order copies from his Fathers 80th birthday shoot back in 1997. One particular image was of him and his brothers seated and lined up in a particular order. It turns out they were matching a photo from 1959 of the brothers in the same sequence! We were able to create the two picture panel you see here. Very special memories spanning decades for our client brought together in one piece.

For more than 20 years, here at Redmonds of Roscrea The Photographers, we have held our annual “Happy Days” charity fundraiser and 2022 was no different! Thanks to the support and generosity of our fantastic clients – old and new – we were able to raise €3470, with 100% of all proceeds going directly to TLC4CF! To enable this, we gave our professional time and materials through a complimentary photo shoot and a beautifully finished 7’’ portrait for everyone who donated to this event and worthy cause.

Niamh Sheedy from TLC4CF was presented with our fundraiser cheque by Brian (and Kermit!!) in our studio in Castle Street. Niamh told us that the proceeds raised from this event will be used to benefit a variety of upcoming activities and needs such as research projects, staffing, clinical trials, nurses, facilities and equipment. TLC4CF is a not-for-profit charity and an affiliated regional branch of Cystic Fibrosis Ireland, covering Tipperary, Limerick and Clare.

And of course, we couldn’t finish this post without saying, “Whatever the weather, Happy Days are here again!”

Over the years, Brian has photographed hundreds, even thousands, of weddings, each unique and many with a tale attached. We lost count of the many times we said ‘we must write these down’.

The best thing about lockdown ending was having the grandchildren to come and stay again. We missed them so much and it was great to spend precious time with them at the weekend. As always, there were special requests about what activities and treats they would like and we were only too happy to oblige.

In Oscar’s case, the only request was to go to work with Grandad. Oscar is eight and is a keen photographer. He also has a great eye for it, so who better to bring along to an outdoor shoot?

Can you imagine what over forty years worth of files look like?  Thousands of negatives – weddings, first communions and confirmations, newborn babies, siblings, grandparents, commercial shoots, scenery.

Now imagine that someone rings up and asks for a picture to be printed from a wedding in 1980!! With a few vital details from the client, we were able to locate the negatives from her wedding in a very short time, the print was made and framed and is now hanging proudly in her home.

This got us thinking – how many people out there have been meaning to get reprints from their photoshoot, and just never got around to it?  Most of us are spending lots of time at home, spring cleaning, looking through drawers that remain unopened from one end of the year to the next.

Now is the ideal time to order that wall portrait from your wedding, to buy Granny the framed picture from your recent studio shoot to give her when lockdown ends ( along with a big hug), and to have that battered old photograph of your Great Grandparents restored and preserved for future generations.

When Theresa Byrne came to see us to have a portrait made, she wanted something a little different.  The result was this great portrait – elegant, timeless, fun, quirky, and definitely eye-catching.

Sometimes we’re asked to find a unique place for a unique girl in a white suit for First Holy Communion. And there’s nowhere as unique as Monaincha Abbey, also known as the 31st Wonder of the World.

This young girl thoroughly enjoyed her photo session among the ruins of this very special place.  And Mum and Dad are thrilled with their finished portrait, which is also very unique.

Each year, in association with the Irish Professional Photographers Association, Redmonds undertake a fundraiser for a particular charity. Redmonds give their time and materials free of charge and each participant receives receives a complimentary portrait for their donation to the charity of 25 euro. This year they  selected the ‘Buddy Bench’ Programme, which teaches young children invaluable life coping skills from a very young age. With its ethos of ‘Look Up, Look Around and Look Out for Each Other’ – a team of trained psychologists visit each school and work with the teacher and children at no cost to the school or parents.Each portrait participant was invited to nominate a school and the winner was Corville NS., Roscrea.

To celebrate 40 years in businesses is a commendable achievement but to give children a means to learn coping skills that will help them throughout their lives is nothing short of amazing and encompasses everything that Redmonds business motto has always stood for – ‘For the Times of Your Life’

The lazy, hazy days of Summer are upon us and everywhere we look there are glorious colours, not least the stunning carpets of bluebells that are transforming our woodlands at the moment.

What better way to spend time with your family than to go for a stroll through the woods, relaxing in the sunshine, admiring the riot of blues.  Precious memories are made on days like these – a chance to unwind, away from the stresses of life, watching the children running and playing, maybe even having a picnic.  What’s the rush?

What would you do if you saw an old photograph lying in the street?

What if you pick it up, what do you do with it then?

Well, when Fiona saw a photograph on Dawson St while on a visit to Dublin she knew exactly what to do. Having worked here at Redmonds of Roscrea for many years, she knew that if the picture got wet and trampled on, it was ruined forever. She picked it up and brought it home, took a picture of it and posted it on Facebook and Twitter. Within a few hours it had been shared and retweeted dozens of times and she had received lots of messages with tips about tracing the owner.

Thirty six hours after the initial post, a message pinged in from a lady called Sibheal saying that the lady in the picture was her Nana. And Nana was about to celebrate her 101st birthday! The photograph was being taken by Sibheal’s Mum to a photographers to be copied and framed as a present for the special occasion when it fell out of her bag.
Addresses were exchanged and the photograph was despatched (via registered post!) to be reunited with it’s rightful owners.

And here is the Birthday Girl Kathleen Doody, on her 101st birthday, holding the precious picture taken of her all those years ago!

Three weeks later, they’re still there! What happened?

All too often, we lose confidence about where and how to hang pictures.  In our mind’s eye we see the happy, smiling family portrait taking pride of place, admired by all who call to see us.  But, in reality, we lose our nerve.  Let’s put it in the hall – no, too ostentatious, people will think we’re showing off.  What about the kitchen?  You’re joking – it’s far too good for the kitchen.  Alright then, the good Sitting Room – sure no-one will see it there.

The thing to remember is that a Family Portrait is a moment in time – and it should be seen every day, a gentle reminder of the people who are most precious to you, something that will bring a smile to your face every time you walk past it and glance at it.  So, why not hang it in the hall?  It’ll be the last thing you see before you leave the house in the morning and the first thing you see when you return home after a busy day.  Or what’s wrong with putting it in the kitchen, the busiest room of the house, the room where the family gathers for meals, where the children do their homework, where the world is put to rights over a cuppa, where memories are made.

Whatever you do, don’t leave it in it’s bubble-wrap jacket, unseen, with no-one to appreciate it’s beauty and uniqueness.

At one week old little Barry King already knows the best places to have forty winks and we were delighted to be able to capture this treasured moment. No gimmicks, no flower pots, no baskets or funny hats – just an honest portrait showing the special connection between parents and their newborn.

And from someone so new to someone a little older….

This man left Ireland over 100 years ago to try his luck at prospecting and exploration.

While the photograph has survived it was in pretty poor condition.

And that’s where we came in. Here at Redmonds of Roscrea we have a wealth

of experience in restoring old and damaged photographs

and we always enjoy a challenge!

Below is the finished, restored photograph. With a little tweaking we managed to

breathe some life into it, and now some details which were lost are visible again.

Notice the camp fire behind him and the canvas tent supported by thin poles cut from the woods behind him. You can even see his pots and pans on the bottom right!

Wedding Bells

We had a lovely day recently at the wedding of Janine and Johnny.  The setting for the reception and photographs was Kinnitty Castle and we never tire of that venue.  Rain or shine, there are plenty of great places to take special pictures of the Bride and Groom, their wedding party and their families.  Despite a forecast of bad weather, Janine and Johnny were steeped in luck and we were able to make full use of the grounds, including the avenue, the stableyard, the courtyard and, of course, the iconic front entrance.  Take a look at some of the picyures we took of the gorgeous bride and her handsome groom.  Many congratulations Janine & Johnny.

It’s always great to see people coming home for the Summer Holidays.  Fiona has been a client for many years and visits Roscrea regularly from her new home in Co Armagh.  This year, she asked us to take some casual pictures of her children in Roscrea’s historic Castle Gardens as a surprise birthday present for their Dad.

As you can see, Tim and Ellen had great fun messing around!

Ellen decided enough was enough at one stage and did a runner.

While Tim just enjoyed showing off his athleticism.

After the photo shoot, we went in to the Roscrea Heritage Society Tower to view the World War 1 exhibition.  Fiona and her sister are currently working on their Family Tree and the exhibition was of particular interest as their Grandfather, George Nixon, and his five brothers, all fought in WW1.  Two of the brothers, Adam and James, were killed in action – one in Gallipoli and the other in Belgium.  The remaining four came home uninjured and settled in Birr and Roscrea.

And this is the picture for Dad’s birthday – we have been photographing Tim and Ellen since they were each two days old.  It’s great to see clients coming back again and again for portraits.

Back in 1997, Laura Flynn had a family portrait done with us. She loved the picture, but her one regret was that she hadn’t made the men wear suits! Fast forward to 2015 and a special birthday for Laura – a new portrait is commissioned. And this time things were going to be different! Laura hired suits for all the boys, including the two new additions to the family – her Grandsons.

The Family portrait is a triumph – elegant and timeless…

… while the boys look dapper and very handsome in their suits!

What a week we have had in Birr.  Despite the inclement weather people still came and we thoroughly enjoyed meeting up with clients, past and present, at our pop-up Gallery in Market Square.

The highlight of the week was, as always, the parade and it didn’t disappoint.  There was a riot of colours and sounds and the atmosphere was electric!

We were delighted to be part of the Artist Trail again this year. Family Portraits, Wedding Portraits and, of course, some of our land and sea scapes formed our exhibition.  Photography is such an exciting art form – it captures real life, in the moment.

Our annual Walking Picture Trail took place on Tuesday evening.  A collection of pictures taken of shop signs which had to be identified.  It proved great fun for all those who took part and the winner of the West Clare Seascape was Tanya Coughlan.  Her Dad was on hand to collect her prize for her.

Birr Vintage Week wouldn’t happen, of course, without the skills and organisation of the BVW Committee.  A group of hard working volunteers, they pull together a professional and enjoyable festival with lots to do for every age group.  Well done to everyone involved.

We receive many Thank You letters, cards and emails and we keep every one of them!  Each one is read, dated and filed away for posterity.  Sometimes, a Thank You arrives and it strikes a chord, as this one did.  It’s from a Bride whose wedding we photographed las December and after she received her finished album she decided to let us know how it was received by family and friends.  We love it and we know you will too!

Andy, the groomsman was doubled over laughing at the picture of himself on the altar pointing his finger👉 He loved it!! 👏👏

When he was looking thru, he kept on sayin, ‘Jaysus when did he take that??’ He has been groomsman a good few times and he said you were thee most unobtrusive photographer he ever came across.

He said he was pulled and dragged around the place at other weddings for photos and the finished albums wouldn’t hold a candle to yours, he just couldn’t get over it!!! Brian, trust me, that’s a serious compliment from Andy!!! 😉😉

His Mam loved the close up one of herself (she said it would be a grand one for her mortuary card 😱😱 she’s a pure character!!!!)

Marissa was weak for the pics of Tom (pageboy) and the flower girls 😍😍😍 I reckon she came real close to my number of “Oh My God”s 😆😆😷😷😷

Words can’t express how proud I am to be showing off the album, it most certainly won’t be put away in a drawer and forgotten about, it’ll be out for everyone to see in our house…..I love hearing the oooing and aaaaing!!!!

All I can say is you are a superb photographer and we all had such fun and crack with you. You captured everything that I wanted and more. I truly am grateful.
